Introduction
What the Simplo API is, what a DTE is, and what you need to emit your first Chilean electronic tax document.
Simplo is Chilean electronic invoicing for developers: a REST API at
https://api.simplo.cl, described by an
OpenAPI contract from which you can
generate a client in your language. It’s complemented by an official
TypeScript SDK (@simplohq/sdk)
and read-only access for agents over MCP. Simplo handles the hard parts —
folio assignment, XML generation, the electronic stamp (TED), digital
signature, submission to the SII and status tracking — behind a typed API.
What’s a DTE? (the 60-second primer)
Section titled “What’s a DTE? (the 60-second primer)”In Chile, invoices and receipts aren’t PDFs you design — they’re DTEs (Documentos Tributarios Electrónicos, Chilean electronic tax documents): XML documents in a format defined by the SII (Servicio de Impuestos Internos, the Chilean tax authority), digitally signed and reported to the SII, which accepts or rejects each one.
| Concept | What it means |
|---|---|
| DTE | An electronic tax document (invoice, receipt, credit note…) — XML, signed and reported |
| SII | The Chilean tax authority that authorizes and validates every DTE |
| RUT | The Chilean tax ID (e.g. 76543210-3) of every company and person |
| Folio | The document number — pre-authorized by the SII, not chosen by you |
| CAF | The SII file that authorizes a range of folios per document type; uploaded once |
Common types: 33 invoice, 39 receipt, 61 credit note, 52 dispatch
guide. The 12 types, their specifics and the status lifecycle:
DTE types.
What it looks like
Section titled “What it looks like”One HTTP call — from curl, C#, Java, Python or anything that speaks JSON:
curl -X POST https://api.simplo.cl/api/v1/billing/dte \ -H "X-Api-Key: $SIMPLO_API_KEY" \ -H "Content-Type: application/json" \ -H "Idempotency-Key: $(uuidgen)" \ -d '{ "tipo_dte": 33, "receptor": { "rut": "76543210-3", "razon_social": "Cliente Ejemplo SpA" }, "detalle": [{ "nombre": "Servicios de consultoría", "cantidad": 10, "precio": 50000 }] }'// 201 Created{ "id": "4f9c…", "folio": 1042, "estado": "firmado", "monto_total": 595000 }In TypeScript, that’s await simplo.dtes.emit({ … }) with the
official SDK.
That’s a Chilean electronic invoice: folio assigned, XML built, digitally signed and queued for the SII (real or simulated, depending on your key). In the sandbox it works immediately; in production, once the one-time setup (digital certificate + folios) is complete.
Before you emit in production
Section titled “Before you emit in production”Two one-time setup steps per company (neither applies in the sandbox — synthetic certificate and folios come ready):
- Digital certificate — uploaded to your Simplo account. Details →
- Folios (CAF) — you download the CAF from the SII portal and upload it to Simplo. Details →
